im sure they did.... its taken from a book/novel, right? how faithful was it to the original story?
the ending is ambigous, no doubt about that.... its just that i was looking for closure, i guess

i think this film is postmodern. you have two concurrent storylines which converge at the end to give viewers the happy ending. it's not explicit in the end that he found out that wufang and langlang are the same people, but if you watch it closely it is. firstly, langlang said her mother worked at a gloves factory (whereas wufang said her mother had to wear gloves all the time). langlang struck a man for hitting his girlfriend, saying she hates violent men, this reflects wufang, whose irresistable impulse to play the just part is due to her family experiences. langlang then runs away with chen to a hotel. the last scene is shot through a glass coffee table. we see what appears to be a glass of green tea, then a pair of dark-framed glasses which wufang wore, suggesting that at that date, she took her glasses off and revealed herself to be langlang. storyline is very subtle, but it gives you a feeling of fulfillment. i often think, if you come from a family background like wufang, how are you supposed to reveal that to the people you date in a society that is rather strict about the importance of good family background? if she came out straight the first date and revealed her story, that'd be the end of the film and the end of her and chen. the crafty way she revealed it, by first masking it as her friend's misfortune, allows empathy and the relationship to develop.
