She's all grown up By Guan Libing
Vicki Zhao used to be painfully shy,so what made her do those sexy ads?
You'd probably remember
China-born actress Vicki Zhao Wei being hurled with facces on a publicity trip to her homeland for wearing a Western-designed outfit with the print of a Japanese flag. Then there are her much-publicised romances with Hong Kong actors Stephen Chow and David Wu.Yet for someone whose every move is monitored by press across Asia,Vicki insists she doesn't enjoy the limelight.
She is now into her second term as the spokewoman for Maric France Bodyline and she has been travelling all over Asia to promote her latest set of print ads where she flaunts her figure in sexy apparel.
"Deep down,"Vicki argues,"I'm not the showy type.I hate to draw attention to myself.Yet it's paradoxical that I am in the entertainment industry and perpetually in the limelight.Truly speaking,I am not that somfortable wearing such sexy oufits."
"But it doesn't mean I don't like my new sexy image. There's a time and season for everything. When I acted in My Fair Princess,I was very young so I looked coy and sweet. Now at 27,I want to have the alluringfemme fatale appeal!"
Vicki claims that working at her space-she's not had a day off in the last six months-she is happy if she can get a chance to read novels by her favourite mainland Chinese authors. She's also been busy with her new action flick,Yu Guanyin(loosely translated as Jade Goddess of Mercy).
In this movie, she stars opposite Nicholas Tse as a married anti-vice officer with a kid,who gets entangled with another man.Vicki considers this her meatiest role ever.
"I like this role-I loved the novel of the same name, from which this movie was adapted. It was a hit in China and many female readers hare yet empathise with the protagonist. She did will in juggle marriage, motherhood and career, but had the human flaw of falling for another man.
"Many other actresses in China would give an arm or leg to clinch this role. But the producer decided to give me the lead role as he thinks I have the presence and ability. Not many actresses my age can anchor such a pivoting role,"says Vicki with some pride.
Asked if she'd follow the steps to fellow actress Zhang Ziyi who made her name in Hollywood,Vicki shoots,"I don't belive in following anyone's footsteps. When I think it's time to break into the international scene,I will. But I'm not desperate for the break and won't just accept any script that comes along."
Vicki, who has acted in Hong Kong box office hits like Shaolin Temple, says acting is her first love and she would like to work with China-acclaimed director Zhang Yimou. She reckons no other profession offers such variety and excitement.
"Yet all said and done,as celebrities we do crave fame and fortune. We can't do with out either.Come on,who can live without money?
"I'm very lucky Hong Kong producers and cinema-goers accepted me readily.Perhaps the fact that I was already popular in China paved the way for me in Asia."
So how did she pull through from all that negative response she got from her Chinese fans over the incident when she wort the infamous outfit bearing Japanese flag?
"I don't let unpleasant things weigh me down. There will always be good and bad events in life, but life must go on."
