Vicki Zhao Wei squeals with glee as she notices the colour of your shirt.Sitting down on the couch,she arches her petite frame over the coffee table nearby to retrieve a copy of her publicity materials.She nods her won mug smilling back at her.The,scanning the pages thought-fully,she assures you,"Don't worry.I'm not floating away.I'm still here with you.I am just multi-tasking."
Down Memory Lane
Meet the brand new Vicki Zhao Wei of today.Banish all passe memories of her as "Little Swallow" back to the Imperial Palace.That cutesy princess role seemed like a past life of Vicki,now that she has blossomed into a confident and classy singer/actress.She will gracefully oblige,though,to take a trip down memory lane with you.
"I started acting when I was 20 years old,during my first year in Beijing Film Academy.I was handpicked for the role of Little Swallow [in the hit TV series My Fair Princess].But I didn't have much work or life experience then,and wasn't wise enough about the ways of the world.Whatever I know today,I have to pick up along the way,in the real world."
The critically-acclaimed actress instantly shot to fame,becoming on of the most widely-recognised faces from China.Not that she was counting on having millions of fans world-wide glued to their television sets-all she knew then was that she was fulfilling her ambition to become a successful artiste.
"At 17,I already knew I wanted to be an actress.That was my calling.Even now,I am aware that a lot of people try their hands at many things,but still don't know what they want in life.I have always concluded that I've been very blessed."Vicki's voice is firm but gentle.
Mummy's Gal
Among her little blessings in life,she counts having a happy family one of her most cherished assets.Growing up in Anhui,China,with a close-knit family of four,Vicki is the only daughter and the apple of her parents' eyes.Till today,she cherishes the happy chilhood memories and cannot stress enough that strong family ties are of the essonce to a person's well being.Vicki still recalls how supportive her mechanial engineer-dad and teacher-mum were when they first learned of her thospian dreams.
This career choice was an about-turn for Vicki as she had long wanted to be a teacher,just like her mother.In fact,before she was bitten by the acting bug,she had even trained to be a teacher at a Teachers' College for Elementary School."My teacher tried to dissuade me!"Vicki reveals in between laughs,"She warned,half in test,that I would snatch the biscuits away from the kids!"
Vicki,a self-professed late bloomer,was too young then.Although she was 17 that year,she femained a kid at heart.With a teacher's certificate under her belt,it remains unimaginable that she could control a classroom of wide-eyed,pyperactive kids.Hmm...it would probably be like watching a spunky Little Swallow teach kids how to leap over roofs and scale walls.
"I froze at the sign at the college become a model for the yonger generation.Wow!As a teacher,you must set up a good example all the same.Your actions and words would be a source of emulation for the young ones.That was a really tough call for the 'me' then."
Sweet As Sugar
At that time and at that age,Vicki was "unbelievably,cartoony".That was the reasong her record company style her as a "cute as a button" charmer in her first couple of albums.She found little reason to protest and went along with their ventures,bringing her "sweetness" to saccharine level to make everybody's day.Sure,the songs suited her adorable image of 1999,but they hardly reflect her present frame to mind.
"I won't deny my past.No matter what you do,you should do it without regrets.So,even if my previous albums sound outdated nowmI can honestly say I put in all my heart and soul at that time.Nevertheless,looking at my past music videos now,I can only go..."her words trail off into a soft sigh.
A Newborn Singer
"After a four year hiatus,Piao[Afloat] makes me feel like a real singer.Maybe I should set my sights on winning music awards now."Vicki boarns with pride.
Back in China,her die-hard fans have responded warmly to her album,tagging Vicki as their multi-faceted idol.When she gots recognised in the streets these days,she is remembered as the one who sings "Piao",and not just the odd princess who recites funny poems.No surprises then,her album has been steadily climbing up the musical charts.Even her former detractors are hailing her as a musical cross between Fay Wong and Na Ying,reputedly two of China's best songstresses.That has boosted her morals and she feels ready to face more challenges on her musical journey ahead.
"Singing poses a greater challenge for me at this stage.And I hope to include my own compositions in my future albums."Vicki conspiratorially adds,"Even if my boss disagrees,I will fight for my cause!"
